They can't all be winners...

I added a handful of raisins to our smoothie tonight. Uuaaickkk...aaugg... it kind of... auug...made a weird gritty texture... I couldn't even finish my glass. Joel drank 2 cups but he's not quite as averse to texture in his drinks as I am. Did you know raisins are a great source of the trace mineral boron? Boron is recommended for helping with bone health and preventing osteoperosis. But I've come to the conclusion that I won't be drinking my way to raisin-caused bone health.

That's funny. You are so creative and adventurous. Thanks for the heads-up. I will cross off raisins on my list of potential smoothie ingredients. Are you putting flax seeds in?

Hi Kristy! It's nice to hear from you. I haven't tried adding whole flax seeds but I do add half a scoop of milled flax seed. (I got a container of it from Costco) Do you add them whole?

We make a lot of smoothies in my house and I was encouraged when I read that you were putting in veggies in. Do you think you can do that in a reg blender?
I have never thought to add raisins...lol..um we like yogurt covered raisins..so we will try to keep up our bone strength that way.
I also put in whole flaxseeds in our smoothies. I usually put in whole frozen strawberries. The seeds mix and noone knows the difference.

Hi! I've always used a regular blender until a few weeks ago when we purchased a Vita-mix. My old blender did a decent job with all vegetables except carrots. The leafy greens were fine. My sister in law made a spinach/fruit smoothie after reading something I wrote. It turned out REALLY GREEN and she was worried her kids would say "yuck"! So she immediately thought of the smart idea to call it a HULK smoothie. Ooooh...they liked that :-) Once your kids drink something green and realize they still like it, you've passed the hardest hurdle.

WOW Sariah, you sure are brave.
Who would've thought to put raisins in a fruit shake.
I hate raisins, I love dried cranberries, but there is just some thing about raisins...
Mom made a fruit shake today and she put spinach in it.
A lot of her fruit shakes turn out pretty sour.
I had to dump a bunch of stevia in mine.
Anyway, I love your blog, and I love to hear about how you and your family are doing!
Tell everyone I said hi!

Hi Naomi! I know what you mean by "there is just something about raisins.." That's why I was hiding them-- but they didn't hide so well. A few days ago I put about 6 or 7 in and they weren't noticable. But this time I added hmmm...maybe 30. Too much.

I think I will try some spinach next time. I sure cant get them to eat it....they have had blue, red, and yellow colored smoothies...y would I leave out green...lol

Sariah, too funny! We have an older vitamix (acquired in the early stages of a business deal that never flew), but LOVE how it grinds up those almonds for smoothies! I can't say I've tried raisins, though! I did toss in a few carrots last night, as per your inspiration, and it wasn't too bad. I grind flax seeds in a coffee grinder, save it in a ziploc, and add a tablespoon or three to my smoothies. I usually also add in some flaxseed oil as well. Have you tried raw egg? I wouldn't with store-bought eggs, but I've read it's super-good for you, especially nice orange homegrown eggs. I admit, the few times I've done this have been ... hard... to manage. :)

Blessings!

Sariah--I'll admit that I'd rather have pain au chocolat over a raisin smoothie any day:)
I've learned that coconut & oats leave a funny texture, too! And the award for "worst flavor in a smoothie" goes to green bell peppers! Flax is great to add to smoothies--but you do have to grind them to get more than just fiber from them, and the fatty acids oxidze after about 3 days, so don't grind too much at a time. Probably more info than you wanted, huh?

Raisins are yummy soaked overnight and then cooked in oatmeal. My mom made us soup one night with her vita mix. Sorry mom, but seriously.
